Family Sponsorship
Five or more Canadian citizens or permanent residents come together in order to assist a refugee or refugee family from another country. In order to take part in the sponsorship, the sponsors must meet the certain criteria. In addition each member in the sponsor category must be 18 years of age or older, and live in the community where the refugee would settle.
The sponsors must be able to provide monetary and physical support for the duration of the sponsorship, which is usually one year. The sponsors must be able to provide a settlement plan and provide evidence that they can afford the costs of sponsorship. The total number of refugees would affect the calculation of support needed for the sponsorship undertaking.
The sponsors are allowed to choose a refugee or refugee family from another country, or referred by a friend from another country or through any other contact from another country. This is called ‘Sponsor -Referred refugee’.
The overseas Canadian mission in the respective country will decide the eligibility of the refugee sponsorship based on Canada’s refugee and humanitarian resettlement program.
The ‘Visa office -referred’ refugee is another stream where a refugee or a refugee family has qualified and has been selected by the Canadian Mission overseas, but the needs the support of a private sponsor prior to coming to Canada. The Group of five sponsors in Canada would request a refugee profile in this case.
